The last productive period of his career started in 1923 with Symphony No. 6 composed at home in Ainola. In the following year, he composed Symphony No. 7. However, he held on to his cigar more than to his fountain pen. Towards the end of the 1920s, composition became scarce, and mysterious Symphony No. 8 never saw the light of the day.
