Front man’s military mess kit. Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union broke out 25 June 1941 and came to an end, Finland defeated, 19 September 1944. As an aftermath, Finland went through the Lapland War against Germany until April 1945. During the first winter of the Continuation War 1941‒1942, both the army and the civilians suffered from severe food shortage. Extensive famine was closer than in any other year of the wars. Front men and civilians were able to survive by fishing, hunting, trips to the farming country and the black market. However, the people in asylums and prison camps were starving.
