The 1940 Olympic Games were cancelled because of the war, but Finland got another chance as the host when peace returned to Europe. Helsinki Summer Olympics were organized in July and August 1952. Aukusti Tuhka designed and Kultakeskus Oy fabricated the Olympic Flame torch of silver and curly birch. It was carried in relay from Olympia, Greece, to the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. At the opening ceremony, the flame was carried and lit by Paavo Nurmi, ”The Flying Finn”. The Olympic Games gathered 5,000 athletes from 69 countries. Most victories went to the United States while the Soviet Union was second in the statistics.
