Vaasan “school crackers” (Koulunäkki) were launched on the market in 1963. Some Finnish primary schools gave free meals to the children of poverty-stricken families since the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1930s, schools built their own kitchens that provided gruel, porridge and soup. During the war, school meals formed an important part of children’s nutrition. All school meals were made free of charge in Finland in 1948. In our days, a warm lunch is offered for free to all preschoolers and pupils in comprehensive schools, secondary schools and vocational schools.
