A large part of Finns are members of the Lutheran Church. Lutheran priesthood was opened to women in 1986, and the first 100 female priests were inaugurated in 1988. Since 1995, women have been able to perform military service, apply to the National Defence University, and work as officers. Female pastor’s uniform was designed by Vuokko Nurmesniemi. The church council of 1990 allowed bishopry to women, but it took until 2010 before the first female bishop was inaugurated.
